Humanities

Humanities is the integration of English Language Arts and Social Studies.  Throughout the program, students explore essential questions that fostered deep and critical thinking about historical and contemporary issues.  Using inquiry, students ask questions, share thinking, research and reflect on a diverse range of texts including documentary film, online media, advertisements, images, poetry, short story, non-fiction texts and fiction. Within these forms of literature, students study main ideas, plot, themes, characters, literacy techniques, figurative language, sound devices, and explore how personal, societal and cultural identities are portrayed. Reading, oral/dramatic presentation, art/imagery and writing are developed as effective, powerful communication tools while students learn to make deeper connections to literature and its impacts both historically and in today’s society.   For more information see the BC English and Social Studies Curriculum.
